Chess 2: The Sequel

Overview
Chess 2: The Sequel is a chess variant first available as a free set of rules to play with an existing chess set. Designed by David Sirlin, it was developed as a video game by Ludeme Games and first released on the Ouya.
Chess 2: The Sequel seeks to reduce the barrier to entry for chess and eliminate some of the more common problems the game has. This is done with several changes.
- New win condition: Any player who moves their king past the center of the board wins.
- 6 Armies including the standard one.
- Dueling: When pieces would be captured, the capturee can initiate a duel using stones (a limited resource) to potentially capture the capturer too.
- New lose condition: If you can’t move you lose.
Armies
- Classic: The normal units from chess.
- Nemesis: Pawns can now choose to move towards the enemy king instead of their normal movement, but cannot start by moving two squares. Instead of a queen, this army has a Nemesis piece that moves like a king and can only capture or be captured by a king.
- Empowered: Knights, Bishops, and Rooks can share abilities. When adjacent, these pieces can move and capture like their neighboring (kinight, rook, or bishop). Queens can only move like a king.
- Reaper: Queens can teleport and capture to any square (except the enemy back row or king). Rooks are ghost pieces that cannot capture or be captured, but can block.
- Two Kings: Instead of a Queen, this army has 2 kings. You lose if either is checkmated, and to min via the Midline rule, both have to cross. Kings can either move as normal or execute a whirlwind AoE that destroys all (including friendly)adjacent pieces. After moving, the player gets an additional move or attack with either king.
- Animals:Knights are Wild Horses. They move the same, but can capture friendly pieces. Rooks are Elephants and can only move up to 3 squares orthogonality, but can capture friendly pieces. If they capture anything, they have to move max distance and capture any intervening pieces. Additionally they cannot be captured from more than 2 squares away. Bishops are Tigers and can only move up to 2 squares diagonally. But on a capture, they teleport back.Queens are Jungle Queens and can move like Rooks or Bishops.
